CTDS Student Robin Li Wins 2 Awards for Research on Facial Recognition Technology

Doctoral student Guohuibin (Robin) Li will be honored by the School of Public Affairs (SPA) on April 20 and ASU’s Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) on April 19 for his research on public sector use of facial recognition technology (FRT).  Robin’s paper on institutional trustworthiness and public acceptance of FRT in policing was selected for SPA’s 2023 award for the outstanding paper by a doctoral student. Robin uses recent US data from the Pew Research Center to examine attitudes toward use of FRT in different contexts and across different dimensions of institutional trustworthiness (ability, benevolence and integrity). In a related vein, Li’s dissertation research further explores ethics and equity in FRT use by public agencies, and he has received the “Social Justice Spotlight Award” from the GPSA Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee for his contribution to just policies regarding emerging technologies in government.
